Low-Dimensional Water on Ru(0001); Model System for X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Studies of Liquid Water
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present an x-ray absorption spectroscopy results for fully broken to a complete Hbond network of water molecules on Ru(0001) by varying the morphology from isolated water molecules via two-dimensional clusters to a fully covered monolayer as probed by scanning tunneling microscopy. The sensitivity of x-ray absorption to the symmetry of H-bonding is further elucidated for the amino (-NH2) group in glycine adsorbed on Cu(110) where the E-vector is parallel either to the NH donating an H-bond or to the nonH-bonded NH. The results give further evidence for the interpretation of the various spectral features of liquid water and for the general applicability of x-ray absorption spectroscopy to analyze H-bonded systems. * corresponding author: [email protected] Work supported in part by US Department of Energy contract DE-AC02-76SF00515. The structure of mixed H2O-OH monolayer films on Ru(0001).
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) have been used to study the structures produced by water on Ru(0001) at temperatures above 140 K. It was found that while undissociated water layers are metastable below 140 K, heating above this temperature produces drastic transformations, whereby a fraction of the water molecules partially dissociate and form mixed H...
متن کاملStability of water monolayers on Ru(0001): Thermal and electronically induced dissociation
To clarify conflicting reports on the composition and stability of H2O and D2O adsorbates on Ru(0001), we have conducted correlated experiments in two laboratories using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy, without and after controlled electron irradiation. Both species form molecular wetting layers; D2O stays molecular to desorption while H2O undergoes a therma...
متن کاملAn investigation on absorption properties of exfoliated graphite for oil spill from Caspian Sea water
Oil spills are the most important environmental impact in oceans and seas. In this article, Oil absorption, which was explored from Sardar-e-Jangal oilfield in Caspian Sea, by exfoliated graphite (EG), was investigated. Graphite was exfoliated through the reaction of graphite-CrO3 intercalation compounds with hydrogen peroxide. The obtained absorbent was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller ...

The atomic structure of thin silica films grown over a Ru(0001) substrate was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, helium ion scattering spectroscopy, CO temperature programmed desorption, and scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. The films were prepared by S...
متن کاملHighly Compressed Two-Dimensional Form of Water at Ambient Conditions
The structure of thin-film water on a BaF(2)(111) surface under ambient conditions was studied using x-ray absorption spectroscopy from ambient to supercooled temperatures at relative humidity up to 95%. No hexagonal ice-like structure was observed in spite of the expected templating effect of the lattice-matched (111) surface. The oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum of liquid thin-film wat...
